CULTURE SHOCK

Culture shock: disorientation, alienation, insecurity. It’s a process of adjusting to another type of life, and learning a new way of expressing and understanding emotions—new meanings of old patterns. It’s the process of decoding.

What does it mean to experience different cultures? How do we decode a new society? Do we ever truly adapt?

Indonesia and Turkey—I have experienced complete immersion in Muslim society in order to UNDERSTAND. This has been an attempt to analyse and comprehend faith. Living in Muslim society is like exploring the underwater world—an entirely different world to me. I have learned to accept that you cannot understand faith; you can simply BELIEVE.

Malaysia & Singapore—melting pots. In each, Muslim, Chinese and Hindu cultures create one society, one country. Do we ever blend in? Do we need to?
